Fireplaces, Chimneys & Spring Cleaning

April 8, 2007

The ashes leftover from wood burning should be cleaned out
of your stove or fireplace as soon as the season is over.
Ashes are beneficial when recycled into the soil of certain
plants such as azaleas and tomato plants. So try and find a
means of recycling ashes rather than just dumping them in
the trash.

SPRING CLEANING INCLUDES THE CHIMNEY!
Your chimney also should be inspected and cleaned
immediately after the burn season is over. Creosote is
corrosive and can cause deterioration as it sits in your
chimney through the warm months. Creosote also has a
"burned ham" type of smell and as the cooler air in your
chimney falls toward the indoor living space with the
approach of warm weather, cleaning the chimney also helps
get rid of that awful smell some homeowners notice during
spring and summer.

NESTING BIRDS & ANIMALS
Animals and birds are attracted to the privacy and
protection offered by your chimney, and often build nests
in there to raise their young. Nesting birds and animals
within your chimney can cause several health concerns in
(addition to the incessant noise)including infestataion of
lice, fleas and - in the worst cases - from maggots who are
attracted to the dead babies who couldn't escape the
chimney when the time came to leave the nest. Additionally,
nesting materials can block the chimney and will provide
fuel for a chimney fire when you start using your fireplace
again in the Fall.

Birds and animals tend to return to the same place to nest.
A chimney cap helps provide protection against their
return, but don't cap a chimney until the critter has left.
After they're gone, have the chimney cleaned and inspected,
then have a chimney cap installed. Chimney caps also help
protect against weather damages.

NOTICING WEAR ON YOUR BRICKS OR MORTAR JOINTS?
Weather takes its toll on your chimney's bricks and mortar.
It is said a chimney is built from the ground up, but fails
from the top down. This is quite true, as rain and snow
plus freeze-thaw cycles deteriorate the chimney over a
course of years. We offer masonry repair services and
waterproofing services.

The time to attend to cleaning, repairs and maintenance for
your chimney and your fuel burning appliances is the Spring
and Summer, when rates are lower and technicians are not so
busy. Then you can glide into cooler weather knowing you're
all ready for that first fire! We offer professional
chimney cleaning, repair and maintenance services in the
upper northwestWashington, DC areas and in Montgomery
county Maryland area. Our chimney products ship nationwide,
so if you need a product not found locally then we'll be
glad to ship any item directly to your home.
